Maybelline Eyestudio: Color Explosion Luminizing Eyeshadow

I've been using this palette for a while, and I think it's a great palette to have if you're a fan of browns, taupes, neutrals and shimmery shades.

I purchased the palette in 05 Caffeine Rush for about $9 at Walmart.

Each colour doesn't have a specific shade, but you can see that you get a wide range of neutrals in this palette. The texture varies with each colour; the top-most colour is mostly shimmery and so it's not so much about the pigment, whereas the darkest shade in the middle is highly pigmented. They are all really soft and blend well, but of course, you'll need a primer to make sure they last all day.

I think this palette is a little pricey, but if this is all you need, then it's a great deal. They come in other colour palettes as well. They come in greens, purples, pinks and blues, in addition to the brown/neutral palette pictured above.

Here are swatches of the colours, without a primer:

Colours (left to right): top colour, middle colour (v-shaped pan), left colour, right colour, bottom colour

Although I do like the colours and their textures, what bothers me the most of the size of the pans that the colours are in. You'll notice that all of them are triangular, and if you're using a brush to apply them (or even your finger), it's difficult to pick up the colour, especially from the pan that the dark brown eyeshadow is in. The others aren't too bad, but that v-shaped pan is the worst.

This palette certainly is eye-catching, not only because of the colours but because of the shape of the pans. Although it is a creative way of packaging eyeshadow, it isn't very practical.

I would recommend this palette if you're looking for some great drug store neutral eyeshadows, but if you already have colours like these, it's probably not worth your money.
Also, if you like using big eyeshadow brushes, or even your fingers to apply eyeshadow, then I wouldn't recommend these palettes because you'll have a difficult time getting the eyeshadow out of the pans.
